The traditional teachings of the Church are full of fear.
Penance, punishment, condemnation, judgement, damnation, guilt, and hell.
All these things are products of human fears.
And they mimic the carrot and stick approach of earthly authorities.
In fact this approach is inspired by fear itself.
Fear of sin, fear of human weakness.
But God is Love.
And "perfect love casts out fear." 1 John 4:18 (NRSV)
