There was a Syrian freedom fighter whose brother was tortured and killed by the secret police.
Fearing for his life he fled the country and boarded a boat bound for Australia.
His companions were other young men, single women, and children.
As the leaking vessel approached Australian waters it was met by an Australian Navy vessel which fired a shot across its bows.
The shot pierced the vessel's hull and the boat began to sink.
The young men, women, and children were thrown into the sea.
As the Australian Navy vessel sailed slowly away he could hear cries and screams as the cruel waters closed over his head.
