Fears and Tears.
When AIDS hit the gay community the violent reaction was triggered by fear.
Fear of disease and death.
Moral panic caused isolation, persecution, and ostracism.
Gay men became pariahs.
But at the same time this stimulated many people's tears.
Sympathy and compassion for gay men suffering from AIDS inspired discussion about homosexuality in our Churches.
The Progressive Christian movement, which supports acceptance of gays and lesbians, began as a study of sexuality in the Churches following the AIDS crisis.
So we have fears and tears.
But it is when our tears are stronger than our fears that we experience spirituality.
And the Love of God.
