Drunk.

Fundamentalist religious leaders are drunk.

Drunk on power!

And power corrupts.

They enforce absolute power over their converts and expect absolute obedience.

And absolute power corrupts absolutely.

"We shall be as gods." - the first temptation.

Pray for them to see.

See that God's representatives on Earth are not powerful potentates but humble lovers of humanity.

  1. I like this post. There is a long tradition in Christianity (and many other religions) where God is viewed primarily as a power. But, there is also a tradition where God is understood as goodness and beauty, and I find that tradition much more meaningful. This post raises the important question: Is the purpose of religion to gain power, or is the purpose to find and promote goodness and beauty? (My thoughts about how this is played out in religious music are at https://www.forwardfaith.org/music-for-a-liberal-faith/)
